Everything You Need to Know About No-Contact Car Accidents

March 17, 2020 – Adam Mann

A no-contact car accident is when only one driver or vehicle is injured without direct collision with another vehicle. Not to be confused with a single-car accident, which is when the driver is responsible for their own crash, a no-contact car accident is the fault of another driver. An example would be a driver swerving into your lane, causing you to crash while evading them. Evading another vehicle can cause you to collide with fences, walls and other hazardous objects. While less common, these collisions can be very dangerous and leave the victim with a damaged or destroyed vehicle, as well as medical bills, lost wages and more.

Legally, when a car accident is not your fault, you are allowed to seek compensation for the damages you sustained in the accident. However, it can be very hard to prove that another driver was at fault for your crash if there was no contact. It is common for the driver responsible for the accident to leave the scene as they may not even know that they caused your accident. Unfortunately, this will oftentimes lead to insurance companies deeming the victim responsible for their own crash, leaving them with the full financial burden of recovery.

Following a no-contact car accident, it is critical to find evidence that another driver caused your accident. Traffic and security cameras, dashboard cameras and witnesses are crucial to proving another driver was at fault, and if possible, identifying the other driver. If the other driver cannot be identified, it is important to protect yourself with Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance. If you have Uninsured Motorist coverage, the unidentified driver may count as an uninsured motorist.

No-contact car accidents can be devastating and unfair, and no one should have to pay for an accident they did not cause.
